Frequently asked questions
- How does PDF to JPG or PNG work on MakeOverPDF?
- Render pages as images at a chosen resolution. MakeOverPDF runs poppler pdftoppm on the server and returns: One image for a one-page document, or a ZIP of one image per page.
- Is PDF to JPG or PNG free and private to use?
- Yes. MakeOverPDF requires no user account, watermarks nothing unless you use the watermark tool, and deletes your uploaded document from the private working directory as soon as the request finishes.
- What are the file size and page limits for PDF to JPG or PNG?
- Every page becomes one image. A one-page document comes back as a single JPG or PNG; anything larger comes back as a ZIP holding one image per page, each named for the page it came from. Resolution is measured in dpi, and the pixel count grows with its square: 300 dpi has about nine times the pixels of 100. 72 is what a screen shows, 150 reads comfortably on one, 300 is the usual print raster. At most 200 pages in one run, and the images together must stay inside the download limit. Both are refused with that explanation — naming the number that caused it — rather than discovered afterwards as a broken download. Split the document when either applies. JPG is compressed with poppler's default quality and suits photographs. PNG is lossless — the right choice for text, line art and screenshots — and will be the larger of the two. The rendering draws what the PDF says to draw, using the fonts it embeds. The text in the result is pixels, not characters: PDF to text is the tool that reads characters.
