Frequently asked questions
- How does PDF to searchable PDF work on MakeOverPDF?
- Add a real text layer to a scan so it can be searched and copied. MakeOverPDF runs Tesseract, after rasterising on the server and returns: One searchable PDF, downloaded immediately.
- Is PDF to searchable PDF free and private to use?
- Yes. MakeOverPDF requires no user account, watermarks nothing unless you use the watermark tool, and deletes your uploaded document from the private working directory as soon as the request finishes.
- What are the file size and page limits for PDF to searchable PDF?
- The pages are re-rendered from the scan and the recognised words are placed over them as an invisible text layer, so what you search and copy is what the recogniser read. A word the recogniser misreads is wrong in the text layer too — this tool does not know the difference. What is recognised follows the quality of the scan. Small print, poor contrast or a page photographed at an angle comes back with errors; the layer says what was read, not what was intended. The recogniser knows the languages the administrator has installed, and no others. Text in a language without data on this server will not come back correctly, and no warning says so — the result is exactly as accurate as the recognition was. A long document is refused up front, naming its real page count, rather than being cut off halfway: there is a page ceiling per run, and the remedy is to split the document and recognise the parts. The result is read back before it is offered: it must keep every page of the input, pass the structure check, and hand its text back out through a different reader — a "searchable" file whose text cannot be selected is the one failure this tool exists to refuse.
- How reliable is PDF to searchable PDF?
- Reliable (Tesseract, after rasterising): Requires the optional Tesseract engine. Recognition accuracy depends on scan quality.
