Remove metadata

Strip the information dictionary and XMP metadata from a document.

Run this tool

The file is processed on this server and deleted as soon as the response is sent. Nothing is stored, and the result is returned directly to you rather than parked behind a link.

The document
Up to 25 MB. The file's contents are checked, not just its name.
Both the document information dictionary (title, author, producing application) and the XMP metadata stream are removed — one without the other leaves half the story behind, which is why this tool never uses only one. Page content is untouched.

How to use Remove metadata

  1. Select your document: Choose the file you want to process with Remove metadata. Your upload is validated immediately against strict format and size limits.
  2. Configure remove metadata options: Adjust any page ranges, compression targets, passwords, or layout settings required for your task. Strip the information dictionary and XMP metadata from a document.
  3. Run and receive your result: Submit the form to run qpdf --remove-info + --remove-metadata directly on this server. Output: One PDF, downloaded immediately. Temporary input files are deleted automatically when processing completes.

Frequently asked questions

How does Remove metadata work on MakeOverPDF?
Strip the information dictionary and XMP metadata from a document. MakeOverPDF runs qpdf --remove-info + --remove-metadata on the server and returns: One PDF, downloaded immediately.
Is Remove metadata free and private to use?
Yes. MakeOverPDF requires no user account, watermarks nothing unless you use the watermark tool, and deletes your uploaded document from the private working directory as soon as the request finishes.
What are the file size and page limits for Remove metadata?
Both metadata stores are removed: the information dictionary (title, author, subject, producing application) and the XMP stream. Measured, not assumed — stripping XMP alone still left pdfinfo reporting the original title, which is why this tool passes both flags every time. Removing metadata does not anonymise a document. Anything visible in the pages — a letterhead, a signature, a name in the text — is untouched, and neither is anything embedded inside the page content. The result is verified before it is offered: the produced file must report nothing for title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer, must carry no information dictionary and no XMP stream, and must keep every page of the original.
How reliable is Remove metadata?
Reliable (qpdf --remove-info + --remove-metadata): Both flags are required. Removing XMP alone leaves the document information dictionary intact, which is why this tool never uses one without the other.
